When I was ready to launch my company Flair, I invited a life coach over for advice. Being two energetic, A-types, we opted for a hike in my woods, over coffee on the couch.

As I shared my entrepreneur concerns and hesitations, he stopped us in front of two trees and asked me to describe them. They couldn’t be more different: One was old, termite infested, had a broken top, with thick, coarse bark on its’ trunk. The other appeared young, was slender with smooth bark, yet strong, with a good root system, and nowhere to go but up.

He asked me to continue.

Hmmm, maybe the old tree is the wise one, staying upright to share wisdom. The other trees in the clearing were showing support and love, and there was nothing above them to get in the way. I suggested that they weren’t systematically planted, that God had dispersed the seeds, and that the young tree was at the beginning of a journey.

What else do you see? He asked.

The young tree was reaching high, and maybe her role was also to protect the crippled, old tree from the elements. Even though today there was not a cloud in the sky, once her leaves bloom, she will shelter the old tree from rain and storm, buffer her from the wind.

Yes, he laughed…

You are ready to Go.

You are strong.

You have love and support from many.

Only you can get in your way.

You also recognize the need to serve others. This journey is not all about Kristie, many are coming along with you and will grow too.

Keep striving up!

During my business successes and droughts, I review this memory and smile at coach Jon’s suggestions. Yes, I have gotten in my own way, but thank the strong root system for feeding and nurturing me. Yes, I am planting seeds and only God knows what goals and dreams will germinate from them. I am learning this endeavor is not going to happen in my time. We are on a different time clock than I am used to, one that is measured in years not months, in relationships not net-clients. I’m learning Persistence. “Let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it”. Philippians 3:15-16 MSG

You may wonder how you can learn so much from two trees, so I encourage you to take some time in creation – from hiking, to watching butterflies or birds, enjoying a pink and purple sunrise, or even listening to the next rain storm. Write down the thoughts swirling in your mind. Allow time to focus and let these thoughts settle and become clear, they are telling you something profound, even if only in a whisper today. Share them with others, you might be surprised who wants to be along with you on your journey.
